Why are people under the impression that women shouldn't do physical labour?

I had to shovel sidewalks at a property my Dad plows this past winter and lots of people came up to me and commented on how hard I was working and that I shouldn't need to do such physically straining work. However, everyone just walked past my 54-year-old father doing the same work. Why is it OK when I'm young and healthy and my Dad is old?
