I'm traveling for the first time on a train, Upstate NY to NC and I was wondering what the seating was like?

Like, is it like a bus where you just sit where ever you can find a seat or do the put you in a seat? And is it any better then a bus, comfort wise and what not because buses are horrible lol. Sorry if the question is dumb haha, I just want to know what to expect.
